The Buccleuch Arms Hotel - Scottish Inn of the Year 2008/2009
The Buccleuch holds a very long tradition when it comes to fox hunting in the Scottish Borders. After all the house and stables were built in 1838 by the Duke of Buccleuch for this very reason. The tradtional Huntsmans house, Kennels and Stables still stand 200 yards away, though have been converted in modern houses. The new kennels are just a couple of miles up the road.
As mentioned the house was built as a hunting lodge with a great stable block behind it, which now serves as our garaging, a small flat, our dry stores, pastry room and freezer and fridge room and laundry. Feeding troughs, old stable partitions and loop rings still protude in various places! Guests would stay here prior to riding out with hounds and be entertained on their return.
There are countless stories about hunting here over the years, though more and more recentley they are fishing and shooting stories! Though hunting in Scotland is now operated under different rules since the ban came in there are still 4 mounted packs here in the Borders, the Duke of Buccleuch, Lauderdale, Jedforest & Berwickshire fox hounds. Hunting can be found going on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday in various parts of the Scoittish Borders. Go just over the Border into England and you have as many again within range.
